Edit PDFs privately, directly in your browser
Silent Editor is a browser-based PDF editor with local-only processing. Edit text, sign documents, merge pages, and export — all without uploading your files to any server. Your documents never leave your device.
Everything you need to edit PDFs
A complete set of PDF editing capabilities — from quick text fixes to full document assembly — powered by client-side JavaScript and WebAssembly.
Text editing
Select and replace existing text spans directly in the PDF. Add text notes and annotations anywhere on the page. Font matching preserves the look of the original document.
Electronic signatures
Place signature appearances with signer name, date stamp, and custom text. Move, edit, and remove signatures before export.
Page operations
Insert blank pages, import from other PDFs, duplicate, delete, and reorder pages. Annotations remap automatically when pages move.
Highlights & shapes
Add colored highlights over text regions. Draw rectangular shapes for emphasis or redaction-style marking. Customize colors and opacity.
Vector export
Preserves selectable text and produces compact files. Ideal for most editing workflows where file size matters.
Visual Perfect export
Renders each page as a high-resolution image for pixel-accurate fidelity when layout precision matters most.
Watermark
Upload a custom image and apply it as a watermark to the current page or all pages at once. Adjust opacity, scale, and position before export.
OCR text recognition
Extract selectable text from scanned or image-based PDFs using local OCR — no server processing. Make scanned documents editable and searchable.
Privacy enforced by architecture, not promises
Your documents stay on your device at every step. No uploads, no cloud processing, no server-side storage — ever. The privacy boundary is enforced in code with production network guardrails.
The browser’s File API reads bytes directly from your local filesystem into an ArrayBuffer in memory. No network request is made.
PDF.js (Mozilla’s open-source renderer) parses and renders pages entirely in the browser using Canvas and SVG. No remote rendering.
All edits — text replacement, signatures, page operations, annotations — are tracked in local application state. Nothing sent to any server.
pdf-lib assembles the final PDF document client-side. The output is generated in memory and saved via the browser’s download mechanism.
The only network traffic is optional: billing checks (via Stripe) and page analytics. None of these channels carry PDF content, text edits, or signature data.
How we compare
Most online PDF editors — Smallpdf, iLovePdf, Adobe Acrobat Online — require uploading your document. Silent Editor takes the opposite approach.

Frequently asked questions
- Do you upload my PDF to a server?
- No. All PDF processing — loading, editing, rendering, and exporting — happens locally in your browser. Your files never leave your device.
- Do I need to create an account?
- No account is required for core editing. You can open the editor, load a PDF, make edits, and export immediately. Account creation is optional and only needed for premium features.
- Is Silent Editor free?
- Yes. The free tier includes text editing, page operations, signatures, highlights, and vector export with a daily limit. Premium removes the cap. During the current open beta, registered users get premium features free.
- What browsers are supported?
- Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on both desktop and mobile. No plugins or extensions required.
- Can I edit scanned PDFs?
- Silent Editor can display and annotate scanned PDFs. Text replacement requires selectable text layers.
- How does Visual Perfect export work?
- Visual Perfect renders each page as a high-resolution image for pixel-accurate fidelity regardless of font complexity or layout difficulty.
- Is the signature feature legally binding?
- Silent Editor provides electronic signature appearances, not certificate-based cryptographic signing. For many approval flows, appearance signatures are sufficient.
- What happens if I lose internet while editing?
- Once loaded, all editing operations work offline. You only need internet to initially load the application.
